A short list of workshops available. These workshops can fit any particular time, ranging from 3 to 6 hours. Some workshops require 1–3 days, and that is noted in the description. Please contact Miguel Guhlin if you would like to contract for a workshop or have questions regarding content.

Read/Write Web Tools (a.k.a. Web 2.0)

  1. Social Bookmarking Your Life! - This hands-on workshop guides you through the ins and outs of social bookmarking for instructional purposes. Learn how to use social bookmarking tools in your classroom, in the office, and board room to share ideas and resources with others.
  2. Authoring Wikis - Learn how to setup your own wiki on your classroom, campus, or district server using free, open source tools that won’t cost you anything.
  3. Facilitating Collaborative Projects using PmWiki - Wikis are powerful tools, and yet sometimes, you lack access to the databases that power wikis. PmWiki is an easier to implement solution that offers the power and functionality of database backed wikis without the headaches.
  4. FlickrFun - Have access to Flickr? Then learn how you can use your Flickr feed in a variety of ways using no cost tools available on the Web. This hands-on workshop will amaze you with everything you can do.
  5. Blog Your World! - Blogging is a fun, exciting way to engage students in the writing process. Learn how to apply Nanci Atwell’s In the Middle writing workshop principles to publishing student writing with blogs. This workshop also has a technical component that will enable you to setup your own blog using either a free, web-based service or using free, open source software tools.
  6. Podcast Panoply - Learn how to do podcasting the cheap, easy, and simple way, whether you’re using a Mac or Windows computer. You’ll also discuss how to use podcasting to enhance classroom learning.

Exploring New Literacies and Information Problem-Solving

  1. The Problem-based Learning Academy - This 3-day academy focuses on walking you through the creation of a PBL unit, online resources, and then discussing practical applications.
  2. Digital Storytelling with MS PhotoStory or iMovie - Learn how to tell digital stories using one or both of these two free storytelling tools.
  3. Digital Storytelling with Web-based Tools - Learn how to tell stories using web-based tools such as VoiceThread.
  4. Download a la Mode - Learn about the different programs you can get for your Mac or Windows computer. Participants receive a CD with over 700 megs of software, as well as links to web sites they can get more.
  5. The Language of Images and Sounds? - Like that video on the web but not sure how to get it for offline viewing? Maybe you’re a teacher who wants to use a web-based video but your district blocks the site? This workshop will show you how to get those videos, convert them for use in your presentations, and share them with others.
  6. Electronic Graphic Organizers - Explore how electronic graphic organizers—including free, open sources ones, as well as web-based ones—can be used in line with Marzano’s 9.

Technical Infrastructure of the Read/Write Web

  1. Creating the Walled Garden - Learn how to setup your own campus/district server so that you can better protect your students.
  2. Moodle Mambo - Learn how to install, setup and use Moodle for a variety of learning activities.
  3. Setting Up a District Blogging Solution? - This hands-on workshop guides you through everything you need to know to provide a blogging platform for your students.
